The Recap: February 2nd

Lake Superior State 64, Ferris State 73
The Four Factors

The Bulldogs picked up the win here on the back of two things they do well: crash the offensive glass (rebouned 41.4% of their own misses) and getting to the free throw line with regularity (almost one free throw for every two field goals attempted). Derek Billing scored 28-points on 7-of-13 shooting which included 5-of-11 from three and 9-of-10 at the charity stripe for Lake State. Ferris was led by guard Dontae Molden who had 20 points.

Saginaw Valley 56, Grand Valley 75
The Four  Factors

Well, the Cardinals got to the free throw line a ton Thursday night in Allendale. Unfortunately, Saginaw Valley's 68% free throw rate was nearly matched by Grand Valley's effective field goal percentage of 66.3%. Nick Waddell scored 26 off the bench in just 25 minutes on the back of 11-of-12 shooting. I repeat, Nick Waddell made 11 field goals, SVSU managed to drain just 14 as a team. Yikes. Eli Redman led the Cardinals with 21 points off the bench by shooting a perfect 11-of-11 at the free throw line and 5-of-10 from the field.

Wayne State 72, Northern Michigan 55

The Four Factors

Wayne State got off to a good start on the Upper Peninsula swing by downing Northern Michigan pretty handily in a rather slow game; just 58 possessions. Due to the efficient shooting, WSU scored at a 1.25 points per possession clip while holding the Wildcats to a paltry 0.96. Northern Michigan's DeAndre Taylor led all scorers with 21.

Findlay 56, Michigan Tech 70
The Four Factors
The Huskies shot the ball well and got to the line frequently against the Oilers who are making the long trip up to Houghton to make the reverse UP trip that Wayne State is making. Findlay's dismal shooting inside the arc -- 10-of-32 for 31.3% -- sunk the Oilers while Michigan Tech ran away with it by going 9-of-16 from deep.

Ashland 69, Ohio Dominican 58

The Four Factors

The Eagles went to Ohio Dominican and took care of the Panthers by 10. More surprisingly, Ashland did it with just four points off the bench -- all due to Ben Mixer. Starters Evan Yates, DaWuan Thomas and Will Evans combined to score 47 of the Eagles 69 total points. The Panthers shot just 40.5% inside the arc and 25% from outside of it, both figures being below their seasonal averages of 47.7 and 30.1% -- neither of which are particularly good.

You can see Saturday projected winners in my Weekly Breakdown: Week 6 post.

Update: upon publishing the post, I realized the dates on some of the graphs are wrong. That was just an error I overlooked; the data within the graphs is correct.
