The Recap: January 21st

Wayne State 71, Ohio Dominican, 48

The Four Factors

Ohio Dominican started the contest going 2-for-20 from the field and the game got out of hand very early. It was 24-6 with just under 6:50 remaining and the Warriors never looked back. Wayne State didn't miss a ton of shots but when they did, they rebounded their own misses with fierce regularity. The Warriors forward Bryan Coleman led the way with 27 points while ODU's only scorer in double figures was Aaron Gibbs.

Northwood 79, Tiffin 68
The Four Factors

The Timberwolves lived at the free throw line against the Dragons -- helped by extending possessions through offensive rebounding -- and came away with an 11-point victory. Bobby Lewis had 26 points to go with a perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw stripe. Tiffin's Joe Graessle had 19 points and seven rebounds but finished just 3-of-13 from deep.

Ferris State 69, Northern Michigan 55
The Four Factors

Ferris State did what the Bulldogs normally do: shoot poorly from inside the arc, shoot well from outside it and get to the free throw line. Oh, and they won the battle on the offensive glass, as well. Kick in winning the turnover battle and you have the recipe for a Ferris State victory. Drew Lehman scored 23 off the bench for Ferris on the back of 8-of-15 shooting.

Lake Superior State 74, Ashland 78 (OT)

The Four Factors

DuWan Thomas scored seven of his 11 points in overtime for Ashland who rode a massive free throw advantage to a four-point overtime win. In fact, Lake State made as many free throws as three's (six) in the game. Kyle Hunt scored 21 for LSSU, but it wasn't enough as the Eagles had four in double figures -- Evan Yates (20), Ronnie Steward (17), Will Evans (16) and the aforementioned Thomas.

Saginaw Valley 68, Lake Erie 51
The Four Factors

The Cardinals of Saginaw Valley got to the charity stripe early and often en route to a 68-51 win against Lake Erie College. Neither team was particularly good on offense scoring 0.98 and 0.71 points per offensive possession, but the Cardinals massive advantage in free throw attempts (26-14) allowed them to cruise to victory. Cardinals starting guards of Greg Foster, Brett Beland and Chris Webb had 16, 16 and 15 points. LEC was led by Rich Austin's 19 points but had no one else with more than six.

Grand Valley State 64, Michigan Tech 50
The Four Factors

The Lakers and Huskies both love a slow-down game and this one fit the bill at just 58 possessions. With the win, Grand Valley bumps up to 6-5 in conference play and dropped Michigan Tech to a log-jam for second place at 7-3. There, the Huskies are tied with Findlay and Ferris State with Wayne State a half-game behind at 7-4. The Lakers owned the offensive glass and clamped down defensively to negate Michigan Tech's frequent trips to the free throw line. GVSU guard James Thomas scored 22 while Michigan Tech Austin Armga was the only player in double-digits -- and he did it off the bench.
